Social Butterflies of LA

 

The idea for the social Butterflies emerged from conversations between Amy LaCoe, Ina Serene, and Christine Daniels.  We envisioned a group for trans-women and trans-men that accentuates and promotes our wholeness and wellness rather than our needs for therapy and treatment.  So this group specifically meets our needs for fun, fellowship, and change.  We are more than just our psychological adjustments in a straight society; we are social, cultural, sexual, and political people, like everyone else, and we have human needs that many of us wish to validate and address as our authentic selves.  So, we are now coming together to mutually support and advocate for ourselves.

We are facilitated and supported by Metropolitan Community Church of Los Angeles, and several of us who participate in the Social Butterflies also attend church at MCCLA.  Like the services and communion at all MCC's, you don't have to belong to MCC nor any religious faith to participate fully in our activities.  Some of us frankly adhere to no religious philosophy or faith.  It is not our place to proselytize, doubt, or question in any way the beliefs and commitments of participants in our activities, and it is our commitment to you that we won't.  Many of us have been in that situation, and frankly, it is uncomfortable.  We do, however; provide information about MCCLA and other open, accepting and progressive places of worship within Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, other denominations of Christianity.  So, welcome to our events.  If you are a transgendered man or woman, or an invited friend or supporter of a transgendered person, please join us for fun, fellowship and change.

 

• We support and promote the dignity of all people everywhere, regardless of race, creed, culture, gender, sexuality, or any other unpleasant distinctions between people.  Words have power, and some distinctions keep us oppressed, or without love, communication and support within diverse humanity, and that is why we are radically welcoming of and supportive.
• We will think globally and act locally to bring freedom, acceptance and justice in the GLBTIQ community, and for people everywhere.
  

Statement of Values

• Our rights are human rights.  We advocate change that improves our lives, and promotes the same freedom and justice for everybody else.  We will not exclude anyone's civil rights, or support legislation that does, just to make it more palatable to the majority.  Those who understand American history should already know that the U.S. Constitutions protects all people, especially those in the minority, no matter how large or small.

Who may not be welcome to join us: (that doesn't include partners or companions of trans men or women who invite you if you both know how and when to go home or get a room): Our events are safe places for trans-men, trans-women, and invited friends and supporters.  Here are some guidelines to inform you if you are in the wrong place:

• If you are transgendered or an invited friend and supporter of a transgendered person, you are welcome.
• It is the policy of the Social Butterflies to provide a welcoming environment free of unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct or communication defined as sexual harassment by the State of California or Federal law.  It is prohibited regardless of the status or relationships the affected parties may have.
